I am sure if we all sat round a table we could share a few of these common wives tales. Told to us by our parents, grandparents or siblings.Fact is most of them are just myths, legends, tales, lies. Call them what you must. But its time to lay down some facts about these myths, and set the record straight.
Myth One: White spots or marks on your nails means you are lacking in calcium? FALSE
Myth Two: Green on the nails means you have fungus growing on them? FALSE
Fungi is whitish yellow in colour and not green. Green markings indicate mold on the nails. This is just like what you get in your bathrooms when moisture gets trapped along with a warm environment. This can often occur when nail enhancements have been on and lifted slightly. Water gets under the enhancement and therefore gets trapped with a nice cosy environment to grow and hey presto! Mold starts growing.
Myth Three: Nail enhancements ruin your nails? FALSE
It is not the nail enhancement that ruins your nails. But simply the nail technician that is applying them. Improper application and abuse of nail tools can lead to numerous problems. Such as thinning and peeling of the nails, infections and in worse cases loss of nails.
Myth Four: Nails are dead? TRUE
The nail you see and spend so much time painting and making look pretty is actually dead. That is why we can cut and file them so easily without it hurting us.
Myth Five: It is important to allow our nails to breathe from time to time to prevent them going yellow? FALSE
As we have already mentioned nails are dead and non living. They have no organs that help them to breathe. Therefore they do not require time to air and breathe to prevent staining or anything else. Staining comes from pigments in nail polishes and not using a base coat to protect the nails.
Myth Six: Placing your hands and nails in cold water after painting them. Will help them to dry quicker? FALSE
Nail polishes dry when the solvents in the product evaporate. Therefore placing them in cold water will only hinder this process.
Myth Seven: Shaping your nails in a square shape will help keep them stronger? TRUE.
Squared shaped nails are the strongest to have because the free edge of the nail is flat and therefore will take less trauma. Oval or pointed is the weakest due to the sides being less and causing the top of the nail to take more impact.
Myth Eight: Eating Jelly will help your nails grow? FALSE
Nails are made from keratin, not gelatin ( which is a processed collagen). This will not effect your nails at all. So unless you love eating it....leave the jelly alone!
Myth Nine: Nails can reflect the state of our health? TRUE
Just like our hair and skin, our nails can reflect the state of health. Such diseases as heart and liver can show signs in the way and state our nails grow. Ridges, dents and flaking can also be an indication. Pitting in the nails can show signs of psoriasis, multiple red lines under the nail plate known as splinter hemorrhages. These can indicate a possibility of heart problems. Just like when you have been feeling low or had a cold. Your hair, skin and nails will always be the first to show.
Myth Ten: Nails continue to grow after death? FALSE
Whilst it may appear that hair and nails keep growing after death. It is merely that skin shrinks as it dries out. Retracting the skin makes the hair and nails appear to have grown a little more.
There you have it. A few facts to get you thinking and to set the record straight. Till next time. Remember: "she who leaves a trial of glitter....is never forgotten!"
