What is a Paraben...that is the question?

So as a beauty educator, salon owner and a "Beauty Geek", I get asked this question alot. So I decided to put my thoughts, ideas and research down as a blog for you make your own minds up and come to your own personal conclusions.

Should I avoid them?

So you may have heard rumours that parabens should be avoided and they are bad for you? You may have never heard of them? It does seem to be the buzz word at the moment. With the power of the internet and beauty journals and such like. Its important to read up on these researches and judge for yourselves. But know enough to explain them to clients, customers and anyone that may mention them.
I found, once you start to look into ingredients in skincare, beauty products and the likes. Its amazing how you view things alittle differently.

What is a paraben? Where can they be found?

Parabens are chemicals used as preservatives, and that’s why they are found in so many products, to give them a longer shelf life.
They are used to fight bacteria and fungus, are widely available, and cost very little to manufacture and use. Nearly all of the parabens used as preservatives are man-made and not naturally occurring.

Parabens can be found in shampoos, commercial moisturizers, shaving gels, cleansing gels, personal lubricants, topical pharmaceuticals and toothpaste, while they are also used as food additives. A large percentage of the products we buy for everyday use contain some form of paraben, so it can be difficult to find products that do not use them.

Why may they be bad for you?

There have been studies and write ups in beauty journels that say that they are potentially dangerous and that they have linked parabens to cancer, I have chosen to take the precautionary route and not use products containing them when I can help it. Whether or not they are as bad as some say they are, I would always rather err on the side of safety when it comes to my body and health.

Parabens can mimic the hormone estrogen, which is known to play a role in the development of breast cancers. Researchers have found parabens in breast tumors and believe there is a relationship between parabens and tumors. As these are found in a wide range of underarm deodorants...its worth thinking about when you next buy your persoanl hygiene products...take a look at the ingredients and see what exactly they contain.
So the jury is still out. Draw your own conclusions from this information. There are paraben free products available out there on the high street. Whilst we know it hasn't been confirmed to be a definite link to cancer, if in doubt its worth knowing that you can take precautionary measures if you have concerns.

Till next time......look after yourselves. Caroline  The Beauty Geek, X

Fake Tanning: Manual V Spray

Firstly, just to clarify the differences between the two types of fake tanning. Manual tanning is applied directly onto and into the skin that has been prepared usually in a cream or lotion format and then is allowed to develop.Spray tan is applied using a compressor type air gun and is applied in a very fine mist in a liquid format and sits onto the skin until it soaks in and then develops. Manual tanning has made a big come from in recent times. Whilst previously it was all about spray tanning treatments for numerous reasons: quickness of the treatment, even application and less product generally used. But with clients wanting  to come to the salon, or treatment area and enjoy a full treatment that involves them giving up an hour or so of their time. This has really helped the manual tan application see a big come back hit! From my experience of learning many moons ago the application of manual tanning before spray tan was even out there....I know myself, I wasn't too kee...

Ten Common Myths You Need to Know About Nails

I am sure if we all sat round a table we could share a few of these common wives tales. Told to us by our parents, grandparents or siblings.Fact is most of them are just myths, legends, tales, lies. Call them what you must. But its time to lay down some facts about these myths, and set the record straight. Myth One: White spots or marks on your nails means you are lacking in calcium? FALSE It means you have caused trauma to your nail by knocking it or sometimes it can be if you bite your nails or put your fingers in your mouth a lot. It is nothing to do with lacking in calcium. It is amost like a little bruise. Myth Two: Green on the nails means you have fungus growing on them? FALSE Fungi is whitish  yellow in colour and not green. Green markings indicate mold on the nails. This is just like what you get in your bathrooms when moisture gets trapped along with a warm environment. This can often occur when nail enhancements have been on and lifted slightly. W...

6 Shocking Soy Wax Candle Benefits

Candles for me mean so much more than a light source. I love nothing more than a snuggle on the sofa, candle light to create that cozy ambience. It creates calm, lovely soft lighting alongside wonderful fragrances that can take you right back to that special time or place. They can mean romance, they can mean sorrow and joy. I light a candle in remembrance to my loved ones. We light candles to celebrate birthdays and special occasions by placing them on top of the cake. The burning question I often get asked why I chose soy wax for my artisan candles? I get comments that soy is more expensive than say cheaper options such as paraffin wax for example? Well, the simple answer is if you dig a little deeper you will see that the savings come at a higher cost in the end. In simple terms, soy wax is better. Better for the environment, better for the home, better for our families and it creates a better perfomring product in my opinion. Which is so important for me when I am creatin...
