Little "Ray of Sunshine"

Hopefully, now we can wave a big goodbye to Winter weather. Welcome home to Spring days and happy holidays!
But, this can come at a price. The English being the ones that as soon as a mere ray of sunshine peers through, we are out in our shorts, T shirts and vest tops. At the same time, showing little more than we may deem as necessary!?

I wanted to give you lovely lot some tips on choosing the right sunscreen and how much should you be applying and how often? These are all points I really don't think most of us understand. I still know of people that don't apply sunscreen because they think it stops them from tanning. There really is No excuse nowadays with improved spray tanning products and ingredients being improved all the time. Sunshine, should bring happy times, we do need sunshine to aid with vitamin D production. But not at a price. Be safe, have an understanding, and look after the skin your in...its your biggest organ after all, and we only get one!

Different Types of UV protection

There are two types of ultraviolet (UV) light that damage the skin UVA & UVB
UVB in particular causes sunburn, which has a strong link to malignant melanoma and is also linked to another more common type of skin cancer called basal cell carcinoma.. So a sunscreen with a high SPF or sunscreen will help to prevent the skin from burning and the damage that can lead to skin cancer.
UVA can penetrate glass and penetrates the skin more deeply than UVB. UVA protection in a sunscreen will help protect the skin against photo ageing such as fine lines and wrinkles caused by the sun and therefore potentially lead to skin cancers.
In an ideal world you should aim to be protected against both types. Look for the following on sunscreen labels:
High protection of SPF 30 or more and 4 or 5 UVA stars or the UVA circle logo

Be aware that it is important to opt for a sunscreen with high SPF as well as a high UVA protection i.e a higher number of stars. Sunscreens that offer both are called broad spectrum.
SPF Protection levels:
Low : 6-14 SPF 6 & 10
Medium : 15-29 SPF 15,20,25
High : 30-50 SPF 30 & 50
Very high : 50+

Applying the correct amount at the correct intervals
Sunscreens come in a range of choices now from sprays to lotions and creams, to wipes making it easier for youngsters to apply themselves. When using a lotion the bare minimum you should apply is at least six teaspoons full approx 36 grams to cover the average body of an adult. Applying less will reduce the protection by almost two thirds if applying half as much as required. Overall message is more is better than less. Apply 15-30 minutes before going out. Reapply shortly after heading out in case you have missed any areas. if you sweat, towel dry yourself or go swimming. Reapply straight after drying off. Up to 85% of the product can be removed when towel drying off after swimming or sweating. Reapply anyway at least every 2 hours.

Education is the key to this, like with most things. We can teach our children the facts and how best to look after their skins. This in turn, with the range of research that continues to be developed into skin cancer, we can at least look after the skin we are in. Be safe. Have fun, Look after our next generations, and theirs......
Happy Sunshine : )

Fake Tanning: Manual V Spray

Firstly, just to clarify the differences between the two types of fake tanning. Manual tanning is applied directly onto and into the skin that has been prepared usually in a cream or lotion format and then is allowed to develop.Spray tan is applied using a compressor type air gun and is applied in a very fine mist in a liquid format and sits onto the skin until it soaks in and then develops. Manual tanning has made a big come from in recent times. Whilst previously it was all about spray tanning treatments for numerous reasons: quickness of the treatment, even application and less product generally used. But with clients wanting  to come to the salon, or treatment area and enjoy a full treatment that involves them giving up an hour or so of their time. This has really helped the manual tan application see a big come back hit! From my experience of learning many moons ago the application of manual tanning before spray tan was even out there....I know myself, I wasn't too kee

Faceframe 3D Eyebrows: taking the beauty industry by storm!

Having done a lot of extensive research about brow extensions over the past few months. I came across this brand FaceFrame3D. What excited me the most was that they have won an invention award for the concept of this brow treatment. Plus it's a UK designed product. If, like me, you like to go for new treatments to add to your salon menus. This is definitely going to blow you and your clients away. I watched a couple of the YouTube videos and was hooked! I did look around at other brands and designs. But it kept coming right back to this company. The training is all fully accredited with BABTAC and therefore recognised within the industry. It's not the cheapest out there. But then I am not always sure that cheapest is best. You do definitely get what you pay for in this world. What is Faceframe3D?  It is a simple concept of applying synthetic individual hairs that are adhered to the skin to create a 3-dimensional eyebrow can last up to 2 weeks depending on the afterca

Failing to prepare, is to preparing to fail: GCSE VTCT Ten Recommendations

I wanted to put together a guidance list of the ten points that I have learnt along my journey teaching this GCSE qualification in order to help support, guide and assist anyone who is about to start teaching this qualification, considering teaching it, or is currently teaching it and needing some additional guidance from someone who has hands on experience. These are my own personal points and by no means set in stone. So please use them as they were intended to be, as a help list. PREPARE: Now I know this might sound a bit of an obvious point as teachers and educators we are always having to think two steps ahead. But by this I mean have your unit scenarios printed for each learner. Have spaces up on your displays so they can collect them if they have lost theirs (students do love to forget things). Have grade descriptors for the unit printed and if they have them glue them into their books so you can mark as you go along and the students know instantly what grade they are
